Rosalyn Yalow has a 3-hour training session for our chess team, now 30 students, to prepare the team to better compete in rated tournaments.

Wednesday afternoon training addresses any gaps our chess players have. There will be three instructors; two will coach the intermediate players (c. 15 children), and one will take the advanced group (c. 10 children). These Wednesday chess classes will be by invitation to those students who have regularly attended the Saturday chess session.

Wednesday classes will prepare students for the nuances of tournament play: Using digital clocks and chess notation (writing down chess moves during a 100-move match) and in the near future using computer programs to review past games. Students will also learn problem-solving techniques and critical thinking to help them find the best counter-moves.

Rules: Wednesday chess team classes end promptly at 3:30 p.m. Failure to pick up your child at 3:30 p.m. will result in his/her elimination from these after-school classes.

DOE Food Services does not provide lunch to Yalow students on Wednesdays. Parents must pack a lunch if they wish to their child to participate.
