The Summer 2017 session of the Family Support Center—for Yalow parents and students—began on Thursday, July 13, 2017. Ten families meet Thursday afternnons with counselors from the Riverdale Mental Health Association. The 8 sessions take place in the school beginning at 2:45 p.m. for parents who have agreed to attend all 8 winter sessions from July 13 through August 31. If you wish to attend the complete 8-week winter session, please sign and return the attached form. Interested parents should apply. A brief interview will follow. Yalow’s 4-week Summer Academy operates from July 6 to July 28, 2016, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., when parents should pick up their children. The purpose of the program is to build skills in reading and math to meet grade-level requirements. 60 students (kindergarteners, 1st graders and 2nd graders) are enrolled in the Summer Academy. They will receive 3 hours of instruction in reading, divided into small groups of 15 students with one teacher per group. Parents should make sure students have had a healthy breakfast before school.
The 2017 Chess Team Summer Camp, running from Thursday, July 6, through Friday, July 28, 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., will feature a holistic approach to learning, including tai chi and music as well as chess. Tai chi will focus on the body, music on the spirit, and chess on the mind. The Chess Team Summer Camp is the foundation for building the Yalow Tigers chess team, preparing students to compete in city, state, and national chess championships. 85 students are participating. Rosalyn Yalow’s first class of 120 kindergarteners celebrate their graduation to 1st-grade on Wednesday. Each student’s family is granted two tickets to the event. Seating is limited.
