NYC Championships Chess Camp
December 27, 2017 @ 9:00 am - December 30, 2017 @ 2:00 pm
The NYC Championships Chess Camp is fundamental for preparing students to compete in the Greater NYC Scholastic Chess Championships on January 7, 2018, at the Brooklyn Marriott. 27 students are participating. The 3-day practice sessions will reinforce the nuances of tournament play: Using digital clocks and chess notation (writing down chess moves during a 100-move match). Students will learn problem-solving techniques and critical thinking to help them find the best counter-moves.
The camp will be directed by National Master Jerald Times, and runs 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 27, Thursday December 28, and Saturday December 30. Attendance is mandatory for players entered in the January 7 championships.
The process of becoming a competitive tournament player helps students gain life skills to be successful players on and off the board. Losing matches before you win teaches delayed gratification. Analyzing your losses to another player—introspection—helps students learn to become reflective. Finding the right move under pressure teaches children to deal with stress. Learning to think ahead is valuable not only in chess but also in life. These chess skills complement and reinforce those being taught in Yalow’s Family Support Group.
