NYS Girls Chess Championship Camp
April 3, 2018 @ 9:00 am - April 5, 2018 @ 2:00 pm
Chess Camp this week is crucial for preparing Yalow’s chess team girls to compete at the NYS Girls Championship the weekend of April 14-15, 2018, in which 15 K-3 students will be competing for Yalow in two divisions. The 3-day practice session, described below and also available to boys on the team, will reinforce the nuances of tournament play—using digital clocks and chess notation (writing down chess moves during a 100-move match). Students will focus on problem-solving techniques and critical thinking to help find the best counter-moves during tournament matches.
The camp will be directed by National Master Jerald Times, and runs 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 3, Wednesday, April 4, and Thursday, April 5. Attendance is mandatory for players entered in the NYS Championships. As mentioned above, boys on the team are encouraged to attend.
The process of becoming a competitive tournament player helps students gain life skills to be successful players on and off the board. Losing matches before you win teaches delayed gratification. Analyzing your losses to another player—introspection—helps students learn to become reflective. Finding the right move under pressure teaches children to deal with stress. Learning to think ahead is valuable not only in chess but also in life. These chess skills complement and reinforce those being taught in Yalow’s Family Support Group.
