November 28, 2017 @ 10:02 am - 11:35 am
1st-grade parents are invited to observe a math lesson to learn what their child is learning in Singapore math. They will see how Singapore math techniques are used and how they align with the New York State Common Core state standards. Parents from the following 1st-grade classrooms are invited to observe on Tuesday:
Princeton University 10:02 – 10:47a.m. & 2:00-2:45 p.m.;
Penn State University 10:02 – 10:47a.m. & 2:47 -3:32 p.m.;
Texas Tech University 10:02 – 10:47a.m. & 1:12 -1:57 p.m.
Singapore math uses manipulatives (scroll pictures below) to teach students number sense, and you will have the opportunity to purchase your own math kit (identical to that which your child uses in school ) to work with your child at home. We have ordered the kits from Japan, and they cost $38 each. Scroll through the slides below to see what manipulatives are included in the kits.
Your children should use these kits to practice problem solving, and we want parents to feel comfortable using them too.
Below we have given you two examples of problem solving that your children are learning to use. this approach to problem solving is sometimes referred to as a concrete,-pictorial-abstract, or C-P-A.
