On Saturday, November 5, 2016, some 40 Yalow kindergarten, 1st-, and 2nd-grade students—the Yalow Tigers—taught their parents how to play chess at Yalow’s first chess open house. Yalow Tigers train every Saturday for the Yalow chess team, and these 5-, 6-, and 7-year-olds learn fast. Fast enough to teach their parents why chess is not only fun (attack, defense!) but also intellectually important, requiring focus and geometrical reasoning. It’s no coincidence that studies show chess programs also increase students’ overall scholastic performance.
